At the Petro Canada Service Centre on Hwy 400, the Ontario Trucking Association, Ministry of Transportation, Ontario Provincial Police and the Ontario Association of Police Chiefs launched a new campaign to report aggressive drivers.
The idea of putting a 12 x 20 decal on trucks, which reads: "HELP Keep Our Workplace Safe – Report Aggressive Motorists, Call Police" may be a great idea.
Minister of Transportation, Jim Bradley said "Aggressive driving causes road tragedies – avoidable tragedies." Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino said, "The OPP takes its responsibilities seriously and appreciates the help we receive from concerned motorists."
The idea of putting the focus on aggressive drivers is laudable. However, let us look at the reality of our highways:
- How often do you see the OPP on our highways? This past summer I traveled to New Brunswick and back twice and only saw one patrol car.
- When is the Minister of Transport going to crack down on motor coaches? Just by virtue of the speed these things travel at is aggressive driving.
- Will members of the Ontario Truck Association be calling police to report themselves? There are plenty of transport drivers who exceed the speed limit, travel in the "No Truck" lane, tailgate, fail to yield or stop, etc.
Let’s start practicing before preaching. I admit that there are some very good truck drivers out there, but the ones that stand out are the ones who don’t follow the rules of the road.
