ANSI / ASME Standard A13.1-1996
The ANSI / ASME Standard for pipe identification is a widely used guideline in determining pipe identification requirements. The purpose of the standard is to "assist in identification of hazardous materials conveyed in piping systems and their hazards when released into the environment. Pipes are defined as conduits for the transport of gases, liquids, semi-liquids or fine particulate dust."
Size Recommendations
The A13.1-1996 standard makes recommendations for the size of letter height and length of color field for various pipe diameters. These recommendations are shown in the table to the right. Our pipe markers, used properly with arrows and banding tape or arrow tape, meet or exceed the standard.

These high-quality pipemarkers are printed on pressure-sensitive vinyl which is chemical resistant and resists fading and scratching. It is recommended that pipes should be marked at both sides of floor or wall penetration, adjacent to changes in direction, adjacent to all valves and flanges and every 25’ to 50’ intervals on straight runs. Stock GHS ANSI A13.1 and Canadian CGSB Standards. Both of these standards comply with GHS within OSHA and WHMIS.
ICC Compliance Center stocks all pure chemicals with the proper names, direction arrows and classification.
