Europe has issued a directive called the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. Its purpose is to minimize the impacts of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment during their life times and when they become waste. It sets criteria for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of these items. In other words, these items should be collected and recycled, not thrown into the trash.
This directive applies to many different electrical items, from refrigerators and televisions to smoke detectors and computers.
Manufacturers of these items in Europe, along with importers of these items into Europe, must have this marking on their products:
This marking can either be applied as a label or directly onto the equipment.
