The Hazardous Materials Regulations of 49 CFR, issued by the US Department of Transportation, sets the standards for the transportation of hazardous materials in the US.

Safe and Secure Transportation of Hazardous Materials in the USUnder 49 CFR, Part 172.704, security awareness training is a mandatory requirement for all hazmat employees. Hazmat employers must ensure that their hazmat employees are trained with 90 days of their hire date, and again every three years. 49 CFR 172.704(e) states: "Each hazmat employee must receive training that provides an awareness of security risks associated with hazardous materials transportation and methods to enhance transportation security."
