The one-gallon paint can is one of the most common inner containers out in circulation among dangerous goods shippers. These cans can be found in large retail home improvement stores, small hardware stores, paint stores, and on our website. What you may not know is the typical gallon paint has two common sizes out in circulation, and it seems that one size, in particular, will be coming more and more prominent in the near future.

What’s the Difference between the two cans?

For many years the standard gallon can, known as the 610 x 708 can was the most common gallon paint can size used. The meaning of the dimensions is the 610 diameter represents 6 10/16” and the 708 height is about 7 8/16”, which equates to approximately 6.6” x 7.490”. This is the gallon can size we sold here at ICC since the beginning. Some time ago, another size gallon paint can came into the picture as well, this size is known as the 610 x 710.5 gallon paint can. As you can see, the height referenced is a little bit different than the original paint can mentioned above. The specs on this can are 6.6” diameter x 7.65” height, which is a little taller than the original paint can, .16 inches to be exact (just under 3/16”). Why does any of this make a difference? Well, major paint can manufacturers are starting to standardize this slightly taller gallon can, so there will be a lot more of them out in circulation throughout this year and moving forward.

What Does This Mean?

As many manufacturers will be changing to the taller gallon paint can, here at ICC we also plan on making the change to the taller paint cans in the very near future. In addition, we will be adding a little height (¼” to be exact) to a few of our boxes and kits and had to re-test the new sizes so they would be capable of holding both the taller and shorter size gallon paint cans. The boxes/kits that we will be adding ¼” to the height are the PK-85 box which includes the combination kits PK-N2GAL and PK-N2GALC as well as the PK-87 box which includes the combination kits PK-N4GAL and PK-N4GALC. Although it may seem the new box sizes are not much different, it will give the user flexibility and assure the user that both sizes of the gallon paint can that will be out in circulation will be a good fit.
