The year was 1922, The Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C; Vancouver, BC started driving on the right side of the road; Louis Armstrong started improvising and adding personal musical variations with his trumpet playing in a style known as jazz; and The NFPA was born!
In case you don’t know, The NFPA is the National Fire Protection Association and in addition to their 100-year anniversary, Fire Prevention Week is being held between October 9th to the 15th.
What is this Year’s Theme?
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.” The purpose of this year’s campaign is to educate everyone about important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe by planning an escape in the event of a home fire. of this year’s campaign is to educate everyone about important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe by planning an escape in the event of a home fire.
Below are some helpful hints from The NFPA on how to make an emergency fire home escape plan:
- Draw a map of your home.
- Show all doors and windows.
- Visit each room and find two ways out.
- All windows and doors should open easily. You should be able to use them to get outside.
- Pick a meeting place outside
- Make sure your house or building number can be seen from the street.
- Talk about your plan with everyone in your home.
- Make sure everyone in your home knows how to dial 911 or your local emergency number.
In addition to these tips, you should practice your home escape plan with your family at least twice a year to ensure that in the event of a fire that everyone knows where to go and what to do. Smoke alarms should be installed in every sleeping room and should be checked monthly to make sure they are working properly by pressing the test button. If your smoke alarm is making a “chirp” noise that likely means that you need a new battery and to replace it immediately. Ideally, you want to make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the alarm, and what exactly to do if it goes off. The NFPA has a great checklist at this link when creating your home escape plan.
