{"id":11197,"date":"2019-04-29T15:58:48","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T19:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.thecompliancecenter.com\/?p=11197"},"modified":"2025-11-25T14:02:40","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T19:02:40","slug":"international-world-day-for-safety-and-health-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/help-center\/articles\/international-world-day-for-safety-and-health-at-work\/","title":{"rendered":"International World Day for Safety and Health at Work"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>The International Labour Organization (ILO) was created in 1919.\u00a0 It is a United Nation\u2019s agency that sets standards, policies and programs for the work force.\u00a0 Comprised of workers, employers and governments the main goals are to \u201cpromote rights at work, encourage decent employment opportunities, enhance social protection and strengthen dialogue on work-related issues.\u201d\u00a0 Each branch, if you will, has equal footing in regards to what programs and actions are implemented. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Starting in 2003, the ILO started \u201cInternational Worker\u2019s Memorial Day\u201d as a way to bring awareness to workers and the workplace including accidents, diseases, safety and health.\u00a0 It has evolved into the \u201cInternational World Day for Safety and Health at Work\u201d and is celebrated every year on April 28.\u00a0 This date also coincides with the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Since the ILO is celebrating 100 years of existence in 2019, they are looking back at what the past 100 years and using that experience to look at the current and future workplace.\u00a0 The theme to this year\u2019s event is \u201cA Safe and Healthy Future of Work: Building on 100 Years of Experience\u201d. The longer report covers the changes to the workforce overtime and what are some of the upcoming changes.\u00a0 The numbers in it are staggering when viewed from a global perspective.\u00a0 It is well worth the read and is free to download.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Thinking about how my work life started, it is surprising how things have changed.\u00a0 I challenge you to think about your first job and ask yourself the following questions:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>How old were you?<\/li>\r\n<li>What type of safety features were in place?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>How has that field changed over time in regards to safety?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>How has technology or automation impacted that role?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Was ergonomics even a word then?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>How were you treated as a worker new to the workforce?<\/li>\r\n<li>What were the working conditions like?<\/li>\r\n<li>What training were you given?<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>With all of that in mind, now think about your current role.\u00a0 What can you do to improve the health and safety of your current workplace? \u00a0What is stopping you from doing them?\u00a0 Have your or your company given thought to the future?\u00a0 Use April 28<sup>th<\/sup> as a day of reflection.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Keep in mind there is much ICC can do for you.\u00a0 We can create signs, pipe markers, tags and labels of all types and styles.\u00a0 We also have placards and truck seals.\u00a0 Wall charts, safety data sheets, spill kits and hardhat decals are also available too.
