{"id":11254,"date":"2019-07-31T17:37:32","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T21:37:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.thecompliancecenter.com\/?p=11254"},"modified":"2019-12-03T11:21:08","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T16:21:08","slug":"world-hepatitis-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/help-center\/articles\/world-hepatitis-day\/","title":{"rendered":"World Hepatitis Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2010, World Hepatitis Day is observed on July 28<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 The goal is to raise awareness of hepatitis as well as the prevention and treatment of the disease.\u00a0 According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hepatitis cause two in every three liver cancer deaths and overall 1.34 million deaths a year.\u00a0 We all need to be educated.\u00a0 This is not a disease found in just one country, a particular ethnicity or age.\u00a0 Here is the chance to educate ourselves.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hepatitis is the inflammation of liver tissue.\u00a0 It is most commonly caused by a virus and there are five main ones commonly referred to as Types A, B, C, D and E.\u00a0 Types A and E are usually short-term (acute) diseases.\u00a0 Types B, C, and D are likely to become chronic.\u00a0 Type A is contracted by direct contact with fecal matter or drinking water contaminated with fecal matter.\u00a0 that has the virus in it.\u00a0 Type E is the result of indirect contact with fecal contaminated food and water.\u00a0 This is why many people are under the misconception that you can only get hepatitis in 3<sup>rd<\/sup> world countries where sanitation is not the best.\u00a0 Types B and C are caused by contact with an infected person\u2019s bodily fluids such as blood. Type D can only happen if someone is currently infected with Type B.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s theme is to \u201cFind the Missing Millions\u201d.\u00a0 According to the World Hepatitis Day website, there are about 290-300 million people are living with viral hepatitis and are unaware of it.\u00a0 A major step in reducing the number of people that COULD be infected is to work to find those that are undiagnosed and get them care.\u00a0 There is a great video at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldhepatitisday.org\/\">https:\/\/www.worldhepatitisday.org\/<\/a> that goes over the many facts shown above and reiterates this year\u2019s theme.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does this mean for workers?\u00a0 Since many of these types are transmitted through bodily fluids including blood, they fall under OSHA\u2019s purview.\u00a0 The standard that address this is 29CFR 1910.1030.
