{"id":206655,"date":"2019-10-02T12:10:04","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T16:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/?p=206655"},"modified":"2020-01-29T13:49:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-29T18:49:41","slug":"fire-prevention-week-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/help-center\/articles\/fire-prevention-week-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Prevention Week 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11359\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.thecompliancecenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/09\/Fire-Prevention-ICC_SEPT19_Blog-Post.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1001\" height=\"301\" \/> Anyone that has taken a training class with me discovers my secret love of superheroes.\u00a0 There is just something about them that makes life fun. \u00a0They show up in all sorts of places during training.\u00a0 From signatures on shipping documents to addresses on packages, it is just a little something to make training a little less boring.\u00a0 I bring this up because the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has designated the week of October 6<sup>th<\/sup>-12<sup>th<\/sup> as Fire Prevention Week.\u00a0 This year\u2019s theme is \u2013 Not every hero wears a cape.\u00a0 Plan and Practice Your Escape.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the NFPA website, some home fires can limit a family to only one or two minutes of time to get out and reach safety.\u00a0 Let that sink in for just a little bit. Two minutes is not a lot of time to make life saving decisions.\u00a0 This is why the goal of this year\u2019s week is to have people make their own home escape plans AND to practice them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are tons of resources on the NFPA site to help you.\u00a0 Simply go to \u00a0https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/Public-Education\/Staying-safe\/Preparedness\/Fire-Prevention-Week to see all of the options.\u00a0 There are videos, activities for children, games and safety tip sheets. Many of these are free to download and use. In an effort to learn more about this year\u2019s theme, I downloaded the Escape Planning Tips sheet on the website.\u00a0 A summary of what is on there is shown here.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tips for Escape Planning:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Make a home escape plan.<\/li>\r\n<li>Know 2 ways out of every room.<\/li>\r\n<li>Have an outside meeting place.<\/li>\r\n<li>Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year.<\/li>\r\n<li>Practice using different ways out of the home.<\/li>\r\n<li>Teach children how to escape on their own.<\/li>\r\n<li>Close doors behind you as you leave.<\/li>\r\n<li>If the alarm sounds, get out and stay out.<\/li>\r\n<li>If there is smoke, get low to the floor and get out.<\/li>\r\n<li>Call the fire department from outside the home.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After reading it, I began to think about the fact that my office is just a space in the basement of our house.\u00a0 It never occurred to me to think about how I would escape if a fire starts upstairs. How would I get out?\u00a0 What about my animals?\u00a0 Are the windows large enough for me to fit through?\u00a0 Where is the smoke detector?\u00a0 This list has certainly given me some things to ponder and change. \u00a0I see an Escape Plan in my future.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As to how this week could be used by your facility, have discussions about how fire prevention and response.\u00a0 Where is this information found?\u00a0 When was the last time a fire drill was held at your facility?\u00a0 Who is on the response team?\u00a0 When was the system last inspected?\u00a0 Often times it is part of a site\u2019s safety and security plan that has this information.\u00a0 Also, some locations are required to have an \u201cofficial\u201d security plan as a result of 172.800 in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations because of certain hazardous materials.\u00a0 This security plan is supposed to be reviewed yearly.
