{"id":6553,"date":"2016-11-28T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-11-28T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.thecompliancecenter.com\/?p=6553"},"modified":"2016-11-28T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T17:00:00","slug":"safe-winter-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/help-center\/articles\/safe-winter-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Safe Winter Driving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the weather gets colder and inevitable snow and ice arrive, it is time to think about winter driving, and the challenges it brings.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Federal Highway Administration, more than 24% of accidents are cold-weather related.<\/p>\n<p>AAA (<a href=\"https:\/\/exchange.aaa.com\/safety\/roadway-safety\/winter-driving-tips\/#.WDMTHrIrLRY\">https:\/\/exchange.aaa.com\/safety\/roadway-safety\/winter-driving-tips\/#.WDMTHrIrLRY<\/a>)\u00a0recommends the following for driving in snow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don\u2019t try to get moving in a hurry. And take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.<\/li>\n<li>Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning \u2013 nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.<\/li>\n<li>The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.<\/li>\n<li>Know your brakes. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS) and need to slow down quickly, press hard on the pedal-it\u2019s normal for the pedal to vibrate a bit when the ABS is activated. In cars without ABS, use \u201cthreshold\u201d breaking, keeping your heel on the floorboard and using the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stop if you can avoid it. There\u2019s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t power up hills. Applying extra gas on snow-covered roads just starts your wheels spinning. Try to get a little inertia going before you reach the hill and let that inertia carry you to the top. As you reach the crest of the hill, reduce your speed and proceed down hill as slowly as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stop going up a hill. There\u2019s nothing worse than trying to get moving up a hill on an icy road. Get some inertia going on a flat roadway before you take on the hill.<\/li>\n<li>Stay home. If you really don\u2019t have to go out, don\u2019t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don\u2019t tempt fate: If you don\u2019t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ICC Compliance Center cares about our employees and customers.
