Come January 1, 2021, the term ORM-D (Other Regulated Material) will finally be a thing of the past.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ORM-D classification has been used to classify small quantities of hazardous materials packaged for retail sales (aka consumer) and shipped domestically in the United States for years. The 49 CFR 171.8 defines a consumer commodity as \u201cmaterial that is packaged and distributed in a form intended or suitable for sale through retail sales agencies or instrumentalities for consumption by individuals for purposes of personal care or household use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

PHMSA decided to remove the classification, replacing it with the Limited Quantity exemption in their final rule HM-215K, way back in 2011. Due to the popularity of the ORM-D classification a long, ten year transition was allowed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, 2021 is right around the corner. So what now? Hopefully your company has already transitioned to the Limited Quantity exemption, which will continue to offer some relief from the regulations. Here\u2019s a quick snapshot:<\/span><\/p>\n

No UN packaging required, No hazard class labels, No shipping papers.<\/span><\/p>\n

You need to be trained, you must apply the <\/span>limited quantity mark<\/span><\/a> and if applicable, RQ\u2019s (reportable quantities) must be identified. The maximum gross mass of the package is 30 kg or 66 lbs.<\/span><\/p>\n
