{"id":734308,"date":"2021-02-10T08:00:40","date_gmt":"2021-02-10T13:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/?p=734308"},"modified":"2025-09-05T01:52:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T05:52:08","slug":"classification-containing-methanol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/help-center\/articles\/classification-containing-methanol\/","title":{"rendered":"Classification Containing Methanol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-857987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ICC_ClassificationMethanol_Blog_2-2021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1001\" height=\"301\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Internationally (IATA and IMDG) methanol ships as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/selector-product-search\/zero\/1230\/zero\/\">UN1230<\/a> Methanol, Hazard class 3 <\/span><em><strong>and<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 6.1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-857996\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ICC_ClassificationContainingMethanol_001.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1366\" height=\"247\" \/>49 CFR has two entries for Methanol<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Column 1 of the first entry shows two symbols. The first one has a \u201c+,\u201d which means the classification is due to human experience. The \u201cI\u201d means that classification is used for international transportation (which makes sense as it is the same as the IATA and IMDG classification).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The nomenclature or symbols used in column 1 can be verified by looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/product\/bk-mancfro-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">49 CFR Part 172.101(b)(1-6)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next entry has a D, which means the entry is for domestic transportation (may ship in the USA only). The international entry is a hazard class 3 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 6.1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-857997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/ICC_ClassificationContainingMethanol_002.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1003\" height=\"117\" \/>We need to consider this when we have a mixture that contains Methanol. When there is more than one alcohol, the family name UN1987 Alcohols, N.O.S or UN1986 Flammable Liquid, Toxic, N.O.S. will apply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thus, for a mixture containing alcohols where Methanol is one of them, the entry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/selector-product-search\/zero\/1986\/zero\/\">UN1986<\/a> would apply for international shipping because there are both flammable and toxic chemicals in the mixture. However, domestically in the US, since the US drops the toxic, you can also ignore it for the mixture, making the entry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/selector-product-search\/zero\/1987\/zero\/\">UN1987<\/a>, Alcohols, N.O.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Transport Canada\u2019s thoughts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Transport Canada posted the following in their <a href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/dangerous-goods\/safety-awareness-materials-faq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FAQ&#8217;s<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, further supporting the international classification:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How do I classify a product that contains a mixture of Methanol with other dangerous goods?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scenario \u2013 Methanol mixed with a Class 8, Packing Group (PG) II dangerous goods<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As per <a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/regulations\/SOR-2001-286\/page-11.html#h-1228225\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Section 2.5<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/product\/bk-clrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TDG Regulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, if a substance meets the criteria for inclusion in more than one class or PG, the substance is dangerous goods, and its classification is determined in the following manner:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The classes in which the dangerous goods are included are ranked in order of precedence in accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/regulations\/SOR-2001-286\/page-11.html#h-1228249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Section 2.8<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0to determine the primary class and the potential subsidiary class or classes;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The potential PG is the one with the lowest roman numeral;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The shipping name in Column 2 of Schedule 1 that most precisely describes the dangerous goods and for which the corresponding data in Columns 1, 3, and 4 are the most consistent with the primary class, the potential subsidiary class or classes, and the potential PG is selected; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The shipping name and the corresponding data in Columns 1, 3, and 4 of Schedule 1 are used as the classification of the dangerous goods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, a mixture containing Methanol and meeting the requirements of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 3, PG II<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class 8, PG II<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As per the table of precedence of classes found in <a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/regulations\/SOR-2001-286\/page-11.html#h-1228249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Section 2.8<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0of the TDG Regulations, Class 3 would be the primary class of this mixture. Furthermore, since the mixture contains Methanol and meets the criteria for a Class 3, Flammable Liquids, the Subsidiary Class 6.1 must be shown. Therefore, the shipping name for this dangerous good would be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/selector-product-search\/zero\/3286\/zero\/\">UN3286<\/a>, Flammable Liquid, Toxic, Corrosive, N.O.S. Class 3 (6.1, 8), PG II<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/selector-product-search\/zero\/1230\/zero\/\"> UN1230<\/a>, METHANOL is assigned to Class 6.1, Toxic Substances, based on human experience and not based on numerical data.
