{"id":857198,"date":"2021-05-13T07:00:41","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T11:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/?p=857198"},"modified":"2025-09-08T00:27:02","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T04:27:02","slug":"hazardous-matt-hits-the-big-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/help-center\/articles\/hazardous-matt-hits-the-big-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Hazardous Matt Hits the Big Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-873339 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/ICC_HazardousMatt_Blog_5-2021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1001\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone\u2019s favorite little blue guy with the orange <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohawk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Hazardous Matt, has finally hit the big time, appearing on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Late_Late_Show_with_James_Corden\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late Late Show with James Corden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Wait, hazardous who?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phmsa.dot.gov\/sites\/phmsa.dot.gov\/files\/2020-02\/checktheboxbrochure-hazardous-matt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hazardous Matt<\/a> has been around for a few years, but this was his first walk on the red carpet of a major television show. Created in 2018, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/check-box\/check-box-it-hazmat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introduced him<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cour friend Hazardous Matt: He\u2019s made of hazardous materials (hazmat), which means that we have to take extra care when we send him somewhere.\u201d He was created to remind the public that many consumer products can be dangerous, and to be the face of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/check-the-box\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check the Box<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3LDZwlJ6KAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outreach campaign<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But despite having his own Youtube video and being made into an adorable anti-stress toy, let\u2019s face it \u2013 Matt has never reached the heights of other public safety mascots like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/check-the-box\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smokey the Bear<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe that will change now that Secretary Buttigieg has introduced Hazardous Matt to millions of late-night views on the Late Late Show as recapped in this <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/status\/1387846019216461834\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tweet<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Matt posed handsomely \u2013 if silently \u2013 while the Secretary told of encountering Matt during his first days at the agency and how Matt now sits in a place of honor on his desk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, some spoilsports might find this sort of outreach a little too lighthearted for a serious topic such as hazardous materials transport. But outreach is an important function of the DOT. A lot of the general public is unaware of how household products, as well as industrial ones, can be dangerous in transport. DOT estimates approximately 1500 transportation incidents a year are due to undeclared hazardous materials, and that in many cases these products have been shipped by people with no idea there were actually rules about how to do so safely. The Check the Box website may start with goofy little Matt, but quickly gets into valuable information for the uninitiated, such as a summary of what products might be hazardous materials, how to get started, and a list of resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any case, Matt has nothing compared to the outreach advertisements from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consumer Product Safety Commission<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which endeavors to spread the word about product safety with a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/10\/29\/18029280\/consumer-product-safety-commission-twitter-memes-social-media-barks-mcwoofins-injuries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surrealistically inspired (or inspiredly surrealistic) posters<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of flying smoke detectors, an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USCPSC\/status\/940638954403061765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eagle fighting a shark labeled &#8220;Unsafe Products&#8221;<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an ATV rider suddenly facing a T. rex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you a newcomer to transporting hazardous materials?
