{"id":857848,"date":"2021-07-26T07:00:08","date_gmt":"2021-07-26T11:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/?p=857848"},"modified":"2021-07-26T07:21:11","modified_gmt":"2021-07-26T11:21:11","slug":"big-changes-coming-for-lithium-batteries-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/help-center\/articles\/big-changes-coming-for-lithium-batteries-in-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Big changes coming for Lithium Batteries in 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-873941 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/ICC_2022LithiumBatteryChanges_Blog_7-2021.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1001\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their May 2021 board meeting, IATA decided to remove the Section II lithium battery option from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/product-category\/publications\/iata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dangerous Goods Regulations<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Section II is referred to in packing instruction PI965 and PI968, which is used for batteries with smaller lithium-ion or metal content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Section II is used, the issue is that the handling, acceptance, and notification requirements do not exist like regular, fully regulated packages. This leaves the carrier vulnerable as they do not know the scope of their specific risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does this mean for shippers? Likely increased cost for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/product-category\/packaging\/lithium-battery-shipping-kits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">packaging<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/product-category\/labels\/lithium-batteries-labels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">labeling<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and training to ensure compliance with the other options. It should be noted that several carriers like UPS (United Parcel Service) and Federal Express (Fed Ex) already do not allow the use of Section II lithium batteries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is all expected to take place in the 63<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, with a three-month transition to March 2022.
