Choosing a <\/span><\/span>4G <\/span>UN box<\/span><\/span><\/a> isn\u2019t<\/span> as simple as <\/span>selecting<\/span> a size<\/span> that fits your inner containers<\/span>, <\/span>there are other <\/span>important factors<\/span> that affect<\/span> this decision <\/span>in order to<\/span> make sure you are <\/span>within compliance with<\/span> the dangerous goods regulations<\/span>. <\/span>For example, depending on your sp<\/span>ecific mode of transport and t<\/span>he dangerous goods you<\/span> are looking to ship, you must make su<\/span>re you check the <\/span>appropriate <\/span><\/span>regulatio<\/span>n<\/span><\/span><\/a> to<\/span> de<\/span>termine<\/span> if a 4G U<\/span>N<\/span> box is <\/span>an acceptable<\/span> outer<\/span> packaging as well as the type of<\/span> inner container you are looking to put inside the box<\/span>. <\/span>But this is not all, there are several other factors bel<\/span>ow t<\/span>ha<\/span>t must be taken into conside<\/span>ration.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n What is the Packing Group and How Much Weight is Going in the Box?<\/strong><\/p>\n In order to remain in compliance with the regulations, it is important to note what packing group your dangerous goods fall under. This would be located in the dangerous goods tables across the various regulations. For example, if your dangerous good has a packing group II, this means that you must choose a packaging with at least a Y rating. This would include a packaging that has an X or Y in the UN packaging specification code. For example, in the UN Specification code below, we know it was tested to a Y rating, so if you have a dangerous good that has a packing group II, the below packaging would meet the requirement. On the other hand, if your dangerous good has a packing group I, the packaging with the specification mark below would not be compliant, and you would have to choose a packaging with an X in the specification marking.<\/p>\n In addition, you <\/span>have to<\/span> make sure the amount of weight you are looking to ship <\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span> exceed the gross weight limit in the UN specification marking<\/span>. <\/span>This weight would include all components such as the <\/span><\/span>inner containers<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/span>liner bags<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/span>cushioning\/absorbent<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the dangerous goods, <\/span><\/span>tape<\/span><\/span><\/a>, and the box itself. In the marking in the example above, it tells you that <\/span>in order to<\/span> use this packaging, you cannot exceed 10.3 KG total gross weight<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Type of Inner Container<\/strong><\/p>\n This is the factor that is often <\/span>overlooked but<\/span> is vital in picki<\/span>ng out a 4G box<\/span> and <\/span>be<\/span>ing within <\/span>compliance<\/span> with<\/span> the regulations<\/span>. <\/span>I<\/span>n a nutshell<\/span>, whatever type of i<\/span>nner contai<\/span>ner the 4G box was UN <\/span>tested with, <\/span>you must <\/span>use<\/span> the sam<\/span>e <\/span>type of <\/span>inner container inside <\/span>of the box<\/span> when<\/span> shipping<\/span> you<\/span>r dan<\/span>gerous good<\/span>s<\/span>. There are some var<\/span>iation<\/span>s allowed per th<\/span>e various r<\/span>egulations (see 49CFR 178.601<\/span> (g)<\/span> (1)<\/span> and TP14850<\/span> 8.1.2 for detail<\/span>s)<\/span>, but <\/span>ge<\/span>n<\/span>erally s<\/span>peaking the<\/span> si<\/span>ze, shape,<\/span> design, <\/span>and<\/span> material<\/span> o<\/span>f <\/span>the inner containers must be th<\/span>e same as what the box<\/span> was teste<\/span>d<\/span> with. <\/span>For<\/span> example,<\/span> the <\/span>box belo<\/span>w was tested with a <\/span><\/span>on<\/span>e-gallon <\/span>ro<\/span>und <\/span>metal paint can with <\/span>lid<\/span><\/span><\/a>, a <\/span><\/span>R<\/span>inglock<\/span><\/span><\/a>, and<\/span> <\/span>3M 375 tape<\/span><\/span><\/a> on <\/span>the t<\/span>op and bott<\/span>om of the box. <\/span>So,<\/span> in<\/span> order <\/span>to<\/span> remain withi<\/span>n complianc<\/span>e, you woul<\/span>d have to make<\/span> sure th<\/span>at<\/span> when you are using this box to<\/span> ship dange<\/span>rous goods that the in<\/span>ner containers <\/span>and com<\/span>ponents <\/span>are<\/span> the <\/span>same<\/span> type<\/span> as what it was tes<\/span>ted with, and if there is a slight<\/span> differ<\/span>ence<\/span> it <\/span>must fall<\/span> within t<\/span>he allowable varia<\/span>tion<\/span>s reference<\/span>d ab<\/span>ove. This box would not be a<\/span>llowed to ship an F-Style metal g<\/span>allon conta<\/span>in<\/span>er, or a plastic g<\/span>al<\/span>lon jug for example as<\/span> those woul<\/span>d be considered <\/span>dif<\/span>ferent designs<\/span> and material. <\/span>It’s<\/span> im<\/span>portant to <\/span>always refe<\/span>re<\/span>nce th<\/span>e <\/span>manufactures<\/span> closing instructions <\/span>before usin<\/span>g a UN <\/span>4G <\/span>box to m<\/span>ake su<\/span>re you ar<\/span>e<\/span> using it with the corr<\/span>ect type <\/span>of inner co<\/span>ntainers and c<\/span>omponent<\/span>s.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n On the other hand, you always have the <\/span>option<\/span> of choosing a <\/span><\/span>4GV box<\/span><\/span><\/a>![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/08\/UNBoxMarkings-300x94.png\")
