This rule will implement requirements that had been first stated as an interim rule and will ensure that lithium batteries are shipped according to the most current safety standards.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some of these provisions will be similar to those found in the regulations from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), while others are specific to the United States.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This Final Rule will follow the interim rule in the following areas:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"7\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559684&quot;:-2,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Symbol&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;\uf0b7&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prohibiting the transport of lithium-ion cells and batteries as cargo on passenger aircraft.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><br \/>\nOriginally, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/product-category\/publications\/us-49-cfr\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hazardous Materials Regulations of Title 49 of the Code of Regulations (49 <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">CFR)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> concentrated mainly on keeping lithium metal cells and batteries (which are primarily non-rechargeable) from passenger shipment. However, current international regulations, such as the ICAO Technical Instructions on the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air consider rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are also too great a risk for passenger aircraft. Therefore, lithium-ion batteries should not be shipped in a fully charged state. (Obviously, this doesn\u2019t apply to non-rechargeable batteries, since this would render them of little use when received, but it does mean that shippers of rechargeable batteries should not send their batteries in a fully charged state.) This will be achieved by a new special provision for lithium-ion batteries, A100.
