Frequently asked questions regarding Overpacks and Overpack requirements.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][toggles style=”minimal”][toggle color=”Extra-Color-1″ title=”What is an Overpack?”][vc_column_text]An enclosure that is used by a single consignor to provide protection or convenience in handling of a package or to consolidate two or more packages<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/toggle][toggle color=”Extra-Color-1″ title=”What regulations allow them?”][vc_column_text]49<\/span>CFR,<\/span> TDG<\/span>R<\/span>,<\/span> IATA, and the IMDG <\/span>C<\/span>ode<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/toggle][toggle color=”Extra-Color-1″ title=”What are Examples of Overpacks?”][vc_column_text]Packages are placed<\/span> on <\/span>a pallet and secured by strapping, shrink wrapping, stretch wrapping, or other suitable means<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>Packages are p<\/span>laced in <\/span>a protective<\/span> outer packaging such as a box or crate.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/toggle][toggle color=”Default” title=”What are the Restrictions when using Overpacks?”][vc_column_text]It is important to understand that overpacks are not a fix for packages that are non-compliant because of size, damage, or other reasons.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All hazardous material packages contained in the overpack must be properly packed, marked, labeled, and in proper condition, as required by the regulations. They must also be packed in accordance with segregation requirements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/toggle][toggle color=”Default” title=”When is an Overpack Label Required?”][vc_column_text]Per <\/span>IATA<\/span> 7.1.7.1, <\/span>49CFR<\/span> 173.25 (a)(4), <\/span>TDG<\/span> 4.10.1 (2), <\/span>and <\/span>IMDG<\/span> Code 5.1.2.1<\/span>, <\/span>t<\/span>he<\/span><\/span> \u201cOVERPACK\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/span>marking<\/span><\/span>\u202fis <\/span>required<\/span> when the required markings representative of each\u202f<\/span><\/span>package<\/span><\/span>\u202ftype contained in the\u202f<\/span><\/span>overpack<\/span><\/span>\u202fare not visible from outside of the\u202f<\/span><\/span>overpack<\/span><\/span>.\u202f<\/span> The lettering on the \u201cOVERPACK\u201d marking must be at least 12 mm (0.5 inches) high.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/toggle][toggle color=”Extra-Color-1″ title=”Are other labels and markings required on the outside of the Overpack?”][vc_column_text]Hazard class labels and required markings are still required on the packaging inside of the overpack.
