Hazmat Driver Requirements<\/h2>\n

A frequently asked question on our helpdesk related to a hazmat driver.<\/p>\n

What is a hazmat driver?<\/h3>\n

A hazmat driver has a hazardous materials endorsement on their commercial driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n

A hazardous materials endorsement (HME) is a certification added to a commercial driver\u2019s license (CDL) that allows the driver to transport hazardous materials in the nine hazard classes. This state-level exam is required for drivers transporting materials that require placarding under the Department of Transportation hazardous materials regulations 49 CFR.<\/p>\n

To obtain an HME, a driver must pass mandatory training and tests to transport all classes of hazardous materials.<\/p>\n

What about a Canadian driver?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Canada, there is no specific certification required to ship dangerous goods. Drivers who wish to haul dangerous goods must obtain their Dangerous Goods Training Certificate, as outlined in Part 6 of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.<\/p>\n

What does that mean for drivers who transport hazardous materials cross-border?<\/p>\n

The United States will accept a Canadian driver\u2019s training certificate in lieu of a HazMat endorsement.<\/p>\n

Canada will accept the Hazmat endorsement on the commercial driver\u2019s license, a copy of the certification for training from the 49 CFR Part 172.700, or a Canadian training certificate issued under Part 6 of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.<\/p>\n
