HPA Updates to Hazardous Substance Assessments<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Health Canada has released new and revised hazardous substance assessments (HSAs) to help suppliers and manufacturers comply with the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR). These assessments provide classification insights for hazardous substances under Parts 7 and 8 of the HPR, supporting the creation of accurate safety data sheets (SDSs) and labels. The latest HSAs include new assessments for 1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone, Cristobalite, DGBE, Ethylene glycol, Styrene, and Quartz silica<\/strong>, along with a revised assessment for Acetone<\/strong>. These resources reflect both the former and amended HPR requirements, assisting stakeholders during the ongoing three-year transition period.<\/p>\n

In addition to these updates, the fees for exemption claims under the Hazardous Materials Information Review Act (HMIRA)<\/strong> were adjusted as of April 1, 2025<\/strong>. This annual fee adjustment is based on the Consumer Price Index and applies to businesses submitting confidential business information (CBI) claims for hazardous product documentation.<\/p>\n

Regulatory engagement efforts continue, with the Workplace Hazardous Products Program participating in the Canadian Consumer Specialty Products Association 2025 Annual Government Interface<\/strong>. Topics covered included legislative authorities, U.S.-Canada regulatory cooperation, label and SDS record-keeping requirements, and modernization efforts under the HMIRA.<\/p>\n

Suppliers and industry stakeholders are encouraged to review the new HSAs and updated fee structure and may provide feedback on assessments or nominate substances for review by contacting Health Canada.<\/p>\n

Initially as an Infantry section Commander in the Princess Patricia Canadian Lite Infantry (PPCLI), he served on two peace keeping missions in the former Yugoslavia, and one combat tour in Afghanistan where his unit was awarded the Governor General Unit Citation for actions in combat. He then continued to serve as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a firefighter, where he completed a diploma in Fire Science\/ Fire-fighting from Memorial University and Occupational Health and Safety diploma from the University of New Brunswick. Lastly, in his career with the Canadian Forces, he served as a member of the Joint Incident Response Unit (CJIRU) as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Operator (CBRN Op), part of the Canadian Special Operation Command (CANSOFCOM).
