All of these standards are referenced in the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/laws-lois.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/regulations\/sor-2001-286\/page-7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations<\/a>\u201d (TDGR) and are authorized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csagroup.org\/about-csa-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Standards Association<\/a> (CSA). As of January 2025, the updated standards are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CSA B339 \u201cCylinders, spheres, and tubes for the transportation of dangerous goods;\u201d<\/li>\n<li>CSA B340 \u201cSelection and use of cylinders, spheres, tubes, and other containers for the transportation of dangerous goods, Class 2;\u201d<\/li>\n<li>CSA B341 \u201cUN pressure receptacles and multiple-element gas containers for the transport of dangerous goods;\u201d and<\/li>\n<li>CSA B342 &#8220;Selection and use of UN pressure receptacles and multiple-element gas containers for the transport of dangerous goods, Class 2.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What Changes Are Involved?<\/h3>\n<p>Basically, these changes will update the procedures for testing and certifying new cylinders, particularly with updates to harmonize with the <a href=\"https:\/\/unece.org\/transport\/dangerous-goods\/un-model-regulations-rev-23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous<\/em> Goods<\/a> (UN Model Regulations).<\/p>\n<p>According to Transport Canada, the major changes to these standards are:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>CSA B339<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Revised requirements for hydrostatic pressure tests at time of manufacture<\/li>\n<li>Revision to the new design criteria<\/li>\n<li>New welding requirements for specification TC-4EM cylinders<\/li>\n<li>Revised requirements for ultrasonically inspecting the starting stock of specification TC-3ALM cylinders<\/li>\n<li>New provisions for requalifying seamless cylinders and tubes by ultrasonic testing instead of a pressure test<\/li>\n<li>New provisions for the requalification of series-4 containers in noncorrosive gas service<\/li>\n<li>Clarified requirements for repairing and rebuilding cylinders<\/li>\n<li>New and revised provisions for applying requalification marks using a metal plate<\/li>\n<li>New requirements for maintaining requalification records<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>CSA B340<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Revised requirements for cylinders and tubes mounted on vehicles and trailers<\/li>\n<li>New requirements for cylinders and tubes longer than 2 metres<\/li>\n<li>Revised filling requirements for carbon dioxide<\/li>\n<li>New provisions for filling specification TC-4LM containers with methane, refrigerated liquid and natural gas, refrigerated liquid with high methane content<\/li>\n<li>Revised provisions for vacuum-insulated closed containers for helium refrigerated liquid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CSA B341<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alignment with the 20th, 21st and 22nd editions of the UN Model Regulations:\n<ul>\n<li>New reference to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 10462:2013 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Acetylene cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Periodic inspection and maintenance&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 10961:2019 &#8220;Gas Cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Cylinder bundles\u00a0\u2014 Design, manufacture, testing and inspection&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 11119-4:2016 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Refillable composite gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Design, construction and testing\u00a0\u2014 Part 4: Fully wrapped fibre reinforced composite gas cylinders up to 150 l with load-sharing welded metallic liners&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 16148:2016 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Refillable seamless steel gas cylinders and tubes\u00a0\u2013 Acoustic emission examination (AT) and follow-up ultrasonic examination (UT) for periodic inspection and testing&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 18119:2018:2021 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Seamless steel and seamless aluminum-alloy gas cylinders and tubes\u00a0\u2013 Periodic inspection and testing&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 20475:2018 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Cylinder bundles\u00a0\u2014 Periodic inspection and testing&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 21172-1:2015:2018 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Welded steel pressure drums up to 3 000 litres capacity for the transport of gases\u00a0\u2014 Design and construction\u00a0\u2014 Part 1: Capacities up to 1 000 litres&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 22434:2006 &#8220;Transportable gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Inspection and maintenance of cylinder valves&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 23088: 2020 &#8220;Gas cylinders \u2013 Periodic inspection and testing of welded steel pressure drums \u2014 Capacities up to 1 000 l&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New provisions for UN pressure drums<\/li>\n<li>Revised shell requirements for UN cylinders for acetylene service<\/li>\n<li>New provisions for periodically inspecting and testing seamless pressure receptacles by acoustic emission examination and follow-up ultrasonic examination<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Revised requirements for the periodic inspection and test of composite UN cylinders and composite UN tubes<\/li>\n<li>New requirements for inspecting the neck mounting surfaces for UN refillable seamless steel tubes<\/li>\n<li>New requirements for design review agencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>CSA B342<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Alignment with the 20<sup>th<\/sup>, 21<sup>st<\/sup> and 22<sup>nd<\/sup> editions of the UN Model Regulations:\n<ul>\n<li>New reference to ISO 10156:2017 &#8220;Gas 11119-4:2016 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Refillable composite gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Design, construction and testing\u00a0\u2014 Part 4: Fully wrapped fibre reinforced composite gas cylinders up to 150 l with load-sharing welded metallic liners&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 14246:2014\/A1:2017 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Cylinder valves\u00a0\u2014 Manufacturing tests and examinations&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New reference to ISO 17879:2017 &#8220;Gas cylinders\u00a0\u2014 Self-closing cylinder valves\u00a0\u2014 Specification and type testing&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>New provisions for UN pressure drums<\/li>\n<li>Updated valve protection requirements<\/li>\n<li>New requirements for mixtures of fluorine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Updated fire test requirements for pressure-relief device system<\/li>\n<li>Revised requirements for cylinders and tubes mounted on vehicles and trailers<\/li>\n<li>New requirements for cylinders and tubes longer than 2 metres<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Who\u2019s Affected and When Will the Changes Take Effect?<\/h3>\n<p>In general, these changes will affect people who manufacture gas cylinders and other pressurized containers, those who requalify them, and those who fill them with pressurized materials. The new revisions to the standards come into force on\u00a0August 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2025.<\/p>\n<h3>How Can You Obtain Copies of the Updated Standards?<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re one of the above groups, you can access the standards in various ways. (Note, however, that they will not be published in the TDGR itself.) CSA standards can be purchased by telephone from the CSA Group at 1-800-463-6727. You can also order them online through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csagroup.org\/store\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSA store<\/a>. You can either choose a paper copy to be mailed to you or a PDF download of the standard.<\/p>\n<p>Want to look at the standard but not buy? You\u2019re in luck, because there is a free option as well. The CSA has an online platform that allows registered users free access to the these and other safety standards that are referenced in\u00a0the TDGR. You can set up a free account on their <a href=\"https:\/\/community.csagroup.org\/community\/ohs\/tdg-standards-view-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Communities of Interest<\/a>\u00a0page. Once you\u2019ve registered, you can search all TDG-related to the CSA standards.
