Back-to-School Safety<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hidden Hazards in Everyday School Supplies<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As parents, we want to believe that everything we buy for back-to-school is completely safe. But not all school supplies are as harmless as they look. Some everyday products that kids use in classrooms or at home actually fall under hazardous materials, and a little awareness can go a long way in keeping them safe.<\/p>\n

Take markers, for example. Permanent and dry-erase markers often contain solvents that give off strong fumes. Glues and adhesives, especially instant or rubber cement, can be flammable. Even craft supplies like paints and modeling clay may contain irritants or chemicals you wouldn\u2019t expect in a child\u2019s backpack.<\/p>\n

Hand sanitizers and disinfecting wipes now staples in every classroom are also flammable or skin irritants if overused. Aerosol sprays, whether for cleaning or projects, are pressurized containers that can burst in the wrong conditions. And let\u2019s not forget lithium batteries inside calculators, laptops, and other rechargeable gadgets safe when used properly, but risky if damaged or overheated. Even a small dust buildup around them can be a fire risk.<\/p>\n

The good news is that awareness makes all the difference. Parents can look for labels like non-toxic<\/em> (ASTM D-4236 for art supplies in North America), supervise younger children, and remind older students to use products in well-ventilated spaces. Just as important, it\u2019s worth taking a moment at home to explain to children why certain products shouldn\u2019t go in their mouths, why batteries shouldn\u2019t be tampered with, and why safe use matters. Education doesn\u2019t begin at school\u00a0 it begins at home.<\/p>\n
