But while these compact powerhouses enable technological convenience, they also pose serious risks, especially when they\u2019re onboard airplanes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been increasingly focused on the dangers lithium batteries can present in aviation, particularly concerning fire and explosion hazards.<\/p>\n<p>Lithium batteries, including lithium-ion\/sodium ion (rechargeable) and lithium metal (non-rechargeable)\u2014can overheat and catch fire under certain conditions. These fires are often triggered by a phenomenon called <strong>thermal runaway<\/strong>, a chemical chain reaction that causes temperature and pressure to spike rapidly, potentially leading to combustion or even explosion.<\/p>\n<p>Common causes of lithium battery failures include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manufacturing defects<\/li>\n<li>Physical damage or punctures<\/li>\n<li>Overcharging or short-circuiting<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to high heat<\/li>\n<li>Improper packaging during shipping<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Inside an aircraft cabin or cargo hold, such failures pose a critical safety risk\u2014especially mid-air, where rapid response and containment are vital.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/hazmat\/resources\/lithium_batteries\/incidents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAA&#8217;s latest report<\/a><\/strong> paints a troubling picture. The FAA notes that many incidents likely go unreported or undocumented, as the agency relies heavily on hazmat incident reports submitted by air carriers to compile this data.<\/p>\n<p>To combat the rising threat of in-flight lithium battery incidents, the FAA has established comprehensive safety protocols:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Passenger Regulations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Spare lithium batteries are <strong>only allowed in carry-on luggage<\/strong>, not checked bags.<\/li>\n<li>Batteries must have <strong>protected terminals<\/strong> to prevent short circuits (e.g., by taping or packaging).<\/li>\n<li>Larger batteries (over 100 Wh) require <strong>airline approval<\/strong> before boarding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Cargo Rules<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lithium-ion batteries shipped as cargo<\/strong> (i.e., not installed in or packed with equipment) are <strong>prohibited on passenger aircraft<\/strong> in <strong>any quantity or size<\/strong>, as mandated by both the FAA and international regulations (ICAO\/IATA).<\/li>\n<li>Such batteries may only be transported on <strong>cargo-only aircraft<\/strong> under strict conditions.<\/li>\n<li>All lithium battery shipments must comply with <strong>Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR)<\/strong>, which include rigorous packaging, labeling, documentation, and state-of-charge limits.<\/li>\n<li>Airlines and freight operators use <strong>fire-containment packaging<\/strong>, <strong>temperature monitoring<\/strong>, and <strong>hazmat detection systems<\/strong> to manage potential in-flight failures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Everyone has a part to play in aviation safety. This includes both shippers and passengers.
