\"\"Top PHMSA Resources for 2026<\/h2>\n

Navigating the dangerous goods regulations can be difficult, even for experienced professionals. With the regulations continuously evolving, knowing where to find reliable, up-to-date information is critical for maintaining compliance. \u00a0With that in mind, PHMSA offers a wide range of resources, that provide practical clarity beyond the dangerous goods Regulations themselves. Below are some of my favorite resources from PHMSA to guide you in 2026.<\/p>\n

PHMSA Interpretations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of my favorite go-to resources that PHMSA has to offer is the interpretations. PHMSA Interpretations are written explanations of the 49CFR hazardous materials regulations<\/a><\/strong> from various members of PHMSA. The interpretations come in the form of letters that originate from various dangerous goods professionals asking specific questions about the regulations and the questions in the letters are answered from members of PHMSA. Although they are only to be used as a form of guidance when following the regulations, I find these especially helpful when I am navigating the 49CFR and come across something that needs further explanation. \u00a0These interpretations do a great job of applying a specific regulation to a real-life scenario.<\/p>\n

For additional context on how PHMSA interpretations are used to clarify regulatory intent, this resource<\/a> provides a helpful overview. <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

FAQS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

PHMSA has a section on their website called Frequently Asked Questions which have been compiled and grouped by topic.<\/p>\n

These FAQS are split into many topics such as training, approvals, safety, security, and general hazardous material information. If you want to know more about any of these topics, the FAQ section is the place to go. For example, if you are questioning training requirements, there are 15 questions and answers that will help you understand whether or not training is required in your situation.\u00a0 And if it is required, we do offer dangerous goods training<\/a><\/strong> here at ICC for all modes of transport.<\/p>\n

Special Permits<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A special permit is a document issued by PHMSA, that permits a person to perform a function that is not otherwise permitted by the 49CFR. These special permits provide relief from specific regulations when shipping dangerous goods. For example, we have a special permit packaging<\/a><\/strong> which allows the user to ship their dangerous goods without having to use hazard class labels (restrictions apply). PHMSA offers access to review past and current special permits. I find it to be a helpful resource to know which special permits are being utilized, as our clients may benefit from applying for a similar special permit that could potentially simplify their dangerous goods shipments.<\/p>\n

Notices and Rulemaking Documents<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This resource helps you stay up to date on the most recent rulemakings. You just have to choose the topic \u201cHazardous Material Transportation\u201d, and all of the most recent rulemakings, proposed rulemakings, and notices will appear. This is a great way to stay up to date with the PHMSA regulations and to know of any possible proposed rules and changes that may arise.<\/p>\n
