As a result, it is expected that IATA will issue its own addendum, along with updates to\u00a0numerous\u00a0operator variations, to align with the ICAO changes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This also explains the delay in publishing the 2026 IATA Lithium Battery Guidance Document. IATA is clearly waiting for the ICAO addendum to be\u00a0finalized\u00a0before locking in its own guidance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One often-overlooked impact of this change is on airside retail operations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If passengers are limited to no more than two power banks, duty-free and airside shops will need to be informed and prepared. Preventing passengers from using power banks to charge devices will almost certainly lead to non-compliance, not necessarily out of malice, but out of necessity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Enforcement and Real-World Risk Considerations\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is a strong likelihood that some passengers will continue to use power banks discreetly, for example inside pockets or bags, where overheating, damage, or thermal runaway events are less likely to be detected quickly. From a risk management perspective, this raises important questions about enforcement, passenger education, and realistic safety outcomes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What Happens Next\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The ICAO Air Navigation Commission (ANC) will\u00a0determine\u00a0the final wording in the coming weeks.
