In this part, we cover the essential <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/labels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">labels<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/placards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placards<\/a><\/strong> required for dangerous goods stored or used in your warehouse, lab, or industrial site. The second part will focus on training requirements to ensure everyone handling these materials stay safe and compliant.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Not Just for Trucks and Large Containers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Placards are not just for transport vehicles or large containers. In a warehouse, laboratory, or storage area, placards are required at the entrance to any space containing dangerous goods, even if the products are not regulated for transportation under the TDG Regulations.<\/p>\n<p>While <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecompliancecenter.com\/ca\/product-category\/labels\/ghs-labels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WHMIS labeling<\/a><\/strong> is often sufficient for individual containers, it\u2019s also important to post visible placards that communicate hazards to first responders, particularly firefighters. These placards help responders make critical decisions during emergencies, especially when time and visibility are limited.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Label Requirements<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Every container of dangerous goods must display the appropriate label from the time it enters your warehouse until it is used or disposed of.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applies to drums, pails, totes, lab containers, and portable tanks<\/li>\n<li>Labels must be legible, durable, and identify the product&#8217;s hazard class<\/li>\n<li>WHMIS-compliant labels in Canada are acceptable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Tip for Managers:<\/em> Make label checks as part of your regular inspections, especially after spills or when handling new shipments.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>Placard Requirements<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Any area where dangerous goods are stored or used must have clear placards posted at the entrance. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Storage rooms<\/li>\n<li>Warehouse aisles<\/li>\n<li>Laboratories<\/li>\n<li>Flammable storage lockers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>How to Apply Placards Properly<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Placards must reflect the product hazards using the TDG classification system. If a product is not regulated under TDG but is classified under WHMIS, it is recommended to use the equivalent TDG placard to communicate the hazard. For example, a Class 8 TDG corrosive placard can be used for a WHMIS only corrosive product.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to apply placards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you only have one product in storage: Post the UN number<\/li>\n<li>Multiple products in the same class: Post the class placard<\/li>\n<li>Products in different hazard classes: Post a placard for each class, or use a \u201cDANGER\u201d placard as a general warning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Tip for Labs:<\/em> Space on doors and walls may be limited. In these cases, the requirement focuses more on visibility than the placard size. A visible TDG class placard or \u201cDanger\u201d sign is still necessary to alert staff and responders.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>Why This Is Necessary<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Placards and labels are not just a formality. They serve as critical warnings that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Help firefighters and emergency responders assess danger quickly<\/li>\n<li>Warn workers and visitors of hazardous materials nearby<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Final Reminder<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Whether a product is regulated under TDG or only classified under WHMIS, marking the hazard is essential. Initially as an Infantry section Commander in the Princess Patricia Canadian Lite Infantry (PPCLI), he served on two peace keeping missions in the former Yugoslavia, and one combat tour in Afghanistan where his unit was awarded the Governor General Unit Citation for actions in combat. He then continued to serve as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a firefighter, where he completed a diploma in Fire Science\/ Fire-fighting from Memorial University and Occupational Health and Safety diploma from the University of New Brunswick. Lastly, in his career with the Canadian Forces, he served as a member of the Joint Incident Response Unit (CJIRU) as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Operator (CBRN Op), part of the Canadian Special Operation Command (CANSOFCOM).
