That was about as technical as things got. No charging cables, no lithium batteries, and very few pressurized containers beyond the occasional fuel source.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Today\u2019s Packing List Looks Different<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Fast forward to today, and the packing list looks very different\u2014whether you\u2019re heading to a cottage, a campground, or anywhere in between.<\/p>\n<p>Now you might be bringing smartphones, tablets, laptops, wireless headsets, power banks, e-cigarettes, aerosol sunscreen, insect repellent, and small propane cylinders for cooking. Individually, these items are everyday essentials. But collectively, they represent a range of dangerous goods classifications under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations\u2014often carried without much thought.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Same Trip, Different Risks<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The difference between generations isn\u2019t just convenience\u2014it\u2019s chemistry.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>What Today\u2019s Gear Introduces<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Today\u2019s gear introduces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lithium batteries (Class 9) in phones, laptops, and power banks<\/li>\n<li>Flammable gases (Class 2.1) in small propane cylinders<\/li>\n<li>Aerosols (Class 2) in bug spray and sunscreen<\/li>\n<li>Flammable solids (Class 4.1) like strike-anywhere matches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Years ago, the risk profile was relatively low. Today, you\u2019re effectively packing multiple hazard classes into a single vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t bring these items\u2014it just means you should understand what you\u2019re carrying.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Quick Note Before You Go<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering how all of this is allowed in a personal vehicle, you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n<p>There is an exemption within the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations that permits individuals to transport certain quantities of dangerous goods for personal use\u2014such as bringing items home from a general store and taking them along on road trips like this.<\/p>\n<p>For a clearer explanation of how this works and when it applies, please refer to my previous blog on the 150 kg gross mass exemption, where I break it down in more detail.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lithium Batteries: Small Device, Big Energy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Modern electronics rely on lithium batteries, which are efficient but sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest risks during a road trip is unintentional activation or damage. A laptop or tablet shifting in the back seat, powering on inside a bag, or overheating in a hot vehicle can create conditions for thermal runaway\u2014a self-sustaining reaction that can lead to fire.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A simple precaution?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Make sure devices are fully powered off, protected from movement, and not exposed to excessive heat\u2014especially if stored in the rear of a vehicle where you won\u2019t notice a problem right away.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Propane Cylinders: Convenient but Pressurized<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Those small, single-use propane cylinders used for outdoor cooking are easy to pack\u2014and easy to overlook.<\/p>\n<p>They fall under Class 2.1 \u2013 flammable gases, and like any pressurized container, they present a risk if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Damaged during transport<\/li>\n<li>Exposed to heat<\/li>\n<li>Allowed to leak in an enclosed space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a cylinder releases gas inside a vehicle, it can displace air and create a flammable atmosphere. Proper storage\u2014ideally upright, secured, and in a well-ventilated area\u2014is a simple but important step.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Aerosols and Sprays: Heat Changes Everything<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Insect repellent and sunscreen in aerosol form are staples of any summer trip. But these products are pressurized and often flammable.<\/p>\n<p>Left in a hot vehicle, they can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build internal pressure<\/li>\n<li>Leak or rupture<\/li>\n<li>Become ignition sources if exposed to flame or sparks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They\u2019re easy to forget about\u2014until something goes wrong.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>When Items Interact<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>What makes modern travel more complex isn\u2019t just the individual hazards\u2014it\u2019s the combination.<\/p>\n<p>A damaged lithium battery near flammable materials, a leaking aerosol in a confined space, or a propane cylinder exposed to heat can quickly turn a routine trip into a dangerous situation.<\/p>\n<p>These aren\u2019t extreme scenarios\u2014they\u2019re the result of normal items being stored without considering how they behave together.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Disposal: Leave No Trace\u2014Including Hazardous Materials<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Spending time outdoors often comes with the principle of leaving no trace\u2014but that should also apply to hazardous materials.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lithium batteries should be returned to proper recycling programs<\/li>\n<li>Empty or damaged propane cylinders should not be left behind<\/li>\n<li>Aerosols should never be burned or punctured<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Improper disposal doesn\u2019t just harm the environment\u2014it can create hazards for others long after you\u2019ve left.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Final Thought<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A summer trip to the great outdoors hasn\u2019t become more dangerous\u2014but what we bring with us has changed.<\/p>\n<p>What used to be a simple trip with a cooler and a cassette player has evolved into something far more energy-dense and chemically complex.
