Emergency crews literally followed a trail of bright red sauce to a truck stop, where they discovered the source of the mystery liquid.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the internet had a field day.<\/p>\n<p>But behind the jokes is a good reminder about hazardous materials response: <strong>not every hazmat incident involves materials regulated for transportation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Wait\u2026Hot Sauce Isn\u2019t a Dangerous Good?<\/h4>\n<p>Nope.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s RedHot isn\u2019t regulated as a hazardous material under the U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR), nor is it classified as dangerous goods for air or ocean transport.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Why Responders Still Took It Seriously<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>So why did firefighters and environmental officials treat the spill seriously?<\/p>\n<p>Because <strong>hazmat teams respond to hazardous situations\u2014not just hazardous materials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A roadway coated in thousands of gallons of sticky, acidic hot sauce creates several legitimate hazards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extremely slippery pavement<\/li>\n<li>Reduced vehicle control<\/li>\n<li>Environmental concerns if the product enters storm drains or waterways<\/li>\n<li>Difficult cleanup due to the sticky residue<\/li>\n<li>Potential property damage to vehicles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In fact, responders called in the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to help prevent the sauce from reaching nearby drainage systems.<\/p>\n<h4>Hazmat Isn\u2019t Always About UN Numbers<\/h4>\n<p>One of the biggest misconceptions about hazardous materials is that every emergency involves a UN number, placards, or orange guidebook pages.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, fire departments respond to countless incidents involving products that are <strong>not regulated for transportation<\/strong> but still require specialized cleanup techniques or environmental protection measures.<\/p>\n<p>Milk, cooking oil, liquid sugar, latex paint, and yes\u2014even hot sauce\u2014can all create significant hazards when released in large quantities.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the spill often matters more than the product itself.<\/p>\n<h4>Containment Matters<\/h4>\n<p>Even though this wasn\u2019t a DOT-regulated shipment, responders still followed many of the same principles used during hazardous materials incidents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify the material.<\/li>\n<li>Stop the release.<\/li>\n<li>Prevent the product from entering waterways.<\/li>\n<li>Protect the public.<\/li>\n<li>Arrange for proper cleanup by a qualified contractor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those basic response priorities don\u2019t change simply because the cargo isn\u2019t listed in the Hazardous Materials Table.<\/p>\n<h4>The Takeaway<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to laugh about an interstate covered in hot sauce\u2014and admittedly, this is one of the more unusual spill stories we\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n<p>But it also highlights an important lesson for shippers, carriers, and emergency responders:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Not every hazmat response involves regulated hazardous materials, and not every non-regulated product is harmless when 40,000 pounds of it end up on a highway.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Sometimes, the biggest challenge isn\u2019t toxicity or flammability.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes\u2026it\u2019s getting Frank\u2019s
