\"\"Shipping Lithium Batteries in Canada? Three New Special Provisions to Know<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you ship lithium metal or lithium-ion batteries in Canada<\/strong>, there are three new Special Provisions you should be aware of.<\/p>\n

As part of the June 2026 amendments to the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDGR)<\/strong>, Transport Canada introduced Special Provisions 13, 14 and 15<\/strong>. These provisions provide clarification for some less common\u2014but increasingly important\u2014lithium battery configurations.<\/p>\n

Here is a quick look at what they address.<\/p>\n

Special Provision 13 \u2014 Batteries Packed With and Contained in Equipment<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Have you ever shipped a package containing batteries inside equipment<\/strong>, along with additional batteries packed with that equipment<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

Special Provision 13 now provides clear direction.<\/p>\n

When a means of containment includes both batteries contained in equipment<\/strong> and batteries packed with equipment<\/strong>, the shipment must use the applicable \u201cPACKED WITH EQUIPMENT\u201d<\/strong> entry:<\/p>\n

UN3091 \u2014 LITHIUM METAL BATTERIES PACKED WITH EQUIPMENT
\n<\/strong>or
\nUN3481 \u2014 LITHIUM ION BATTERIES PACKED WITH EQUIPMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Special Provision 13 also addresses packages containing both lithium metal and lithium-ion batteries<\/strong> packed with and contained in equipment. In this situation, both applicable UN numbers and shipping names must be included on the shipping document and displayed on the means of containment in accordance with Part 4.<\/p>\n

Something to remember:<\/strong> If you are shipping equipment with batteries installed and<\/strong> additional batteries packed alongside it, take another look at the UN number and shipping name you are using.<\/p>\n

Special Provision 14 \u2014 Batteries Installed in Cargo Transport Units<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Special Provision 14 introduces requirements involving:<\/p>\n

UN3536 \u2014 LITHIUM BATTERIES INSTALLED IN CARGO TRANSPORT UNIT<\/strong><\/p>\n

This provision applies to lithium metal or lithium-ion batteries installed in a cargo transport unit when the specified conditions are met.<\/p>\n

Among those conditions, the battery must:<\/p>\n
