Understanding UN Packaging Under CGSB-43.150

Selecting Compliant UN Packaging Under the New CGSB-43.150 Standard

Per our other articles on the subject, recent amendments to Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations (TDG) have introduced a new standard governing UN packaging. The CGSB-43.150, Design, manufacture and use of UN standardized drums, jerricans, boxes, bags, combination packaging, composite packaging and other packaging for the transport of dangerous goods, classes 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, and 9, is now incorporated by reference in TDG section 5.6(a)(iii). The new CGSB-43.150 replaces the former TP14850 standard and is now the applicable standard for selecting and using these types of UN standardized packaging for dangerous goods shipments in Canada. Much like the 49CFR, IATA, and the IMDG code, it is important to know how to navigate through this standard to remain in compliance with the dangerous goods regulations when choosing compliant UN packaging.

How to Use CGSB-43.150 to Select UN Packaging

Much like the other dangerous goods regulations, the CGSB 43.150 has a table that has the following information referenced in various columns for specific dangerous goods, which is located in Annex A.

Start With Annex A

Let’s say you are shipping a class 3 flammable liquid in packing group II or III.  For general items you would go to column 6, where it says to use packaging instruction 1.  However, any other UN number mentioned below is designated another specific packing instruction.

Finding the Correct Packing Instruction

For Example, if you are shipping UN 1196 (ETHYLTRICHLOROSILANE ), it tells you to go to packing instruction 10.

Understanding Packaging and Capacity Limits

Referenced below, packing instruction 10 lists all of the compliant packaging and capacity limits.  For example, if you are using a glass bottle, you cannot exceed 1 liter per inner container and are allowed to use several different types of outer packaging listed as long as you don’t exceed 400KG net mass.

Don’t Forget Special Provisions

Another thing to keep in mind, if there are any special provisions for a specific UN number, they will be listed at the bottom of the packing instruction, in this case there are none.  A copy of the new CGSB 43.150 can be found HERE.
