The clock is ticking for chemical suppliers in Canada. On 15 December 2025, the transition to WHMIS 2022 will be complete — and compliance will no longer be optional. This update fully aligns Canada’s Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) with the United Nations’ GHS Revision 7.

That means all manufacturers, importers, and distributors must have:

WHMIS 2022 introduces several key updates that suppliers must prepare for:

  • New hazard categories – such as non-flammable aerosols and chemicals under pressure.
  • Revised classification thresholds – affecting how substances are categorized.
  • Expanded SDS requirements – especially in Section 9 (Physical and chemical properties)
  • Labeling updates – including revised precautionary statements.

The Countdown Is On!

  • By 15 December 2025, WHMIS 2022 is mandatory.
  • After that, non-compliant labels or SDSs will put you at risk for fines.
