Proof of Classification: Stay Compliant

Proof of Classification: Stay Compliant

Understanding TDG Classification Requirements

When it comes to transporting or importing dangerous goods in Canada, compliance doesn’t stop at the shipping document. Under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations, Part 2.2.1, consignors are required to keep a Proof of Classification on file for five years.

And when regulatory inspectors ask for it—you must be ready.

What is a Proof of Classification?

A Proof of Classification is the documented evidence showing how your product was classified as a dangerous good. According to the TDG Regulations, it can take the form of:

  • A test report
  • A lab report
  • Or a written explanation of how the product was classified

What Must Be Included

This documentation must include:

  • The date of classification
  • The technical name of the dangerous goods (if applicable)
  • The classification itself
  • The method used under TDG or UN Recommendations

In short: it’s your paper trail of compliance, and Transport Canada expects you to have it available on demand.

The Risk of Non-Compliance

Recently, Transport Canada inspectors have caught companies off guard—finding businesses unprepared to provide proper Proof of Classification. Without it, you risk:

  • Fines or penalties during inspections
  • Delays in shipping due to missing documentation
  • Reputational damage if compliance failures are discovered

Inspectors don’t just look at your shipping papers—they look at whether you can back them up.
